Black Community Housing Advisory Table
About
The Black Community Housing Advisory Table (BCHAT) was founded in 2021. We are a coalition of social service and housing providers, developers, planning experts, government and community leaders who aim to eliminate housing inequity for Black residents across the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area (GTHA). This is achieved through the articulation of housing needs for Black communities, and the provision of guidance and recommendations designed to improve their access to a broad spectrum of secure, safe, and affordable housing.
Foundations
- We recognize that Black communities are heterogeneous, and will ensure that the composition of BCHAT reflects the diversity of culture, identities, lived and professional expertise of community members.
- We will engage a diversity of leaders involved in the continuum of the Black housing and housing support sector to improve housing access for Black communities.
- We will ensure that decision-making is supported by the effective, transparent, and meaningful engagement of existing and future affordable housing service users.
- We affirm that our framework for discussions and recommendations will be rooted in the following values: equity, anti-racism, anti-oppression, engagement, intersectionality, self-determination and intergenerational sustainability.
